Character Information
Name: Gabriel (goes by Gabe) Callahan Age/Birthday: 28 // March 9th, 1983 Sex: Male
Appearance: Gabriel stands about 5'9", an average height in his family. He has shorter cut dark brown hair (though he does grow it out every now and again) and eye color to match. He works out regularly and maintains a lean, and slightly muscular physic. As for defining marks, There are several scars on his legs, prominent ones, from his surgery. A small scattering of scars are also above his hip, a few over his chest, and another few over his left bicep from shrapnel injuries.
Supernatural Affinity
Species/Group/Race: Were-panther Power(s): Just your general, run-of-the-mill born were powers.
Personality: Gabriel, for the most part, is quiet. Normally, he'd rather react with action as opposed to words (sans touching if possible). He's intelligent, and usually thinks his actions through before embarking on anything really important. He's kicked a smoking habit (one he dropped four years ago) and quite literally, almost always, has gum on him. Despite all of Gabriel's hindrances, deep down, he's extremely loyal at heart. If he does let someone in, he'll do whatever it takes to protect them, fiercely even. And despite such an occasional rough and quiet exterior, Gabriel loves Star Wars. If someone managed to get him into a conversation involving it at all, he'd practically gush. He's a geek at heart but never really shares that with anyone.
History: Gabriel was born to your average Were family. His mother and father had average jobs (both worked for the county they lived in) and they maintained a modest income. It was enough to hold over a family of four. Gabe's younger sister Ava was a were as well, the entire family making up a small black panther pride. For the most part, Gabe grew up in a normal school, only his closest friends knowing what he was, and he fit in quite well. There weren't too many problems, and he did well enough that he was offered a military scholarship when he graduated high school. Taking it, Gabe was enrolled and began attending almost immediately after graduating.
His background and abilities disclosed, the military made sure to make full use of him whenever possible. Though, while deployed to Afghanistan, he more then occasionally tagged along with Humvee battalions to serve as extra cover fire. It was in one instance where Gabe found himself in trouble. On a routine scouting mission, the truck he was riding on (open backed, not a Humvee) ran over an IED. The truck flipped into a side embankment, no deeper then about three feet, but it was enough to get Gabe pinned under the rear tire in an awkward position. The bones in his legs were obviously broken and he'd suffered a serious concussion, but he'd survived. When he was returned to the closest military hospital after a day of air transport (at the time, it was Germany), doctors started working on him. Knowing it would be painful enough as a human to heal, it would be worse if they tried to set the bones and then Gabe would still have to shift during a full moon. A specialist was called in to perform surgery on Gabe while in his were form. This would mean he'd have to stay this way until everything had fully healed. Gabe agreed and asked that he be allowed to call his family before everything was arranged. Personal business aside, Gabe shifted and the long surgery began. Temporary pins were inserted and the bones were reset. All in all, it was done quite well considering what they had to work with at the time. However, Gabe now had to remain in his were state indefinitely until the doctors could remove the pins.
It was two months before Gabe was approved for pin removal. During that time, he spent time alone in the hospital. He was secluded from other patients and nurses and doctors not involved in his particular case. As far as anyone else working in the hospital knew, Gabe was never there. The seclusion took it's toll though. Gabe began to build up an aversion to touch. Whenever the doctor's came in to check on him, it was more then difficult to move about. His muscles pulled unnaturally and the idea kept gnawing in the back of his mind that he might never be able to shift back and walk normally again. That thankfully wasn't the case, but the isolation has seriously affected him. After his final check up, two months and two weeks in, Gabe shifted back for the first time. It was an awkward feeling, legs aside. He hadn't spoken to anyone in that entire length of time and had almost completely forgotten what it felt like. Physical therapy lasted over the span of two years, but he did well. The shifting made things difficult (as did being touched by the PT), but he made it work.
Returning to civilian life was the hardest part. Being honorably discharged, Gabe made his way back home to the US. He found that life back in his hometown of Chicago was more difficult then expected, and he wanted something new. A change. Hopefully something that would kickstart his reintegration into a normal life again. Moving up to Toronto, he found himself a nice quiet apartment, and a job as a bouncer. Only living there for about three months, Gabe makes do.
Weaknesses: Touch is Gabriel's biggest weakness. It's a physical aversion, but it's very much mental as well. Touch isn't painful, but it shakes something within him, as he's associated it to his time back in the hospital. No real comforting touch for that long a period of time, has caused him to shy away from any form. Hugs were even difficult when it came to family. He's been asked by this family to get help, and he has lied to them before about doing so. It's something he doesn't think he needs help with, but obviously does.
Another weakness is emotional attachments. The only ones he really has are to his family. When it comes to others, Gabriel has seriously distanced himself. He doesn't have that many friends, and his antisocial tenancies need to be broken.
Strengths: With the military training he has, Gabriel is excellent in hand to hand combat. Despite his rather average size, he's far more capable of holding himself in a fight. He's quick and strong (thanks to his general powers as a were) and he's not one to pick a fight with someone he knows he cannot size up.
Gabriel's also rather handy with anything involving an engine. He had plenty of downtime between missions to work on a few vehicles in the Middle East and has become familiar with the mechanics. If one needs fixing, he has at least a general knowledge of what could use fixing.
Family Members: Ron (father), Lara (mother), Ava (younger sister)
Sample journal entry: Not that I don't enjoy listening to birds outside my window, but actively considering killing the bird that lives in the window across from my apartment. I work late nights, so hearing it squawk at all hours between nine am to about noon is more then irritating. It'd be fine if they kept it inside but they insist on keeping it on their balcony. And the kids playing in the alley only seem to provoke it. I've considered investing in thicker windows, the bullet proof kind, but I think the shrill sounds might just permeate the walls though my hearing would deny me any peace, either.
On a lighter note, I think I might start considering investing in motorcycle. I've never really needed a car here in town, but lately I've been wanting to get out more. A bike's a lot easier for me to deal with, and less expensive. Not that money's an issue, but I'd rather have something to amuse myself with and a bike would give me more of a hobby I guess. I don't know if anyone around here knows any local dealers, but I'd be interested if anyone had ideas. I'm sure I could order one online and have it shipped in, but I'd rather have more of a hands on look at one if possible.
Sample RP entry: It had been more then three days since Gabriel had shifted. It was difficult to keep himself out of that state. Shifted, he felt more in control, and certainly more comfortable in his own skin. The way his muscles moved, how it felt to run, he knew it wasn't good and that it was a habit he needed to break. He couldn't live like this. Normal weres didn't live like this (most didn't, at least). He kept skittering around the term addiction but he knew it was a serious problem he needed to face. Three days had been good for him though. He even went as far as to start a conversation with someone at the local bookstore. Though it was simply to ask where the nonfiction section was, but it was still a brief conversation. Touch was still an issue though. When the woman had placed her hand on his shoulder, his entire body tensed. It felt like an enormous pressure had been placed on him, and he was desperate to pull away. It had taken ever ounce of self control to take the ginger brush of her hand off his upper arm. And he remembered how relieved he felt to feel it go.
But now it was night, and he'd made his way out into the woods near his apartment. There was a small clearing not too far in where he'd started to take small cat naps (no pun intended) during the day. Tonight he wanted to sleep out in the warm, muggy heat. The sounds of crickets surrounded him as he slowly padded with quiet paws around the oval shaped clearing. Nosing around a bit of upturned dirt, he could smell a raccoon that he'd run into the night before outside of his apartment. It had a distinct musk to it and he could swear it had rolled around in some kind of women's perfume. The smell itself was a bit irritating, so he pushed the dirt around, trying to mask the odor. He was just about to lay down on the damp soil when he heard the sounds of feet moving in his direction. He was upwind so he wasn't able to get a good scent on what or who was headed his way, so he backed himself into a bush, and stayed quiet as he waited.
